Powiem Wam, że ta książka jest fascynująca, a zarazem smutna i wkurzająca. Budzi we mnie zresztą wiele skrajnych emocji. Może dlatego, że obnaża pewną prostą prawdę – Lech Wałęsa konsekwentnie wymyka się oczekiwaniom, prostym i jednoznacznym ocenom. W liderach chcielibyśmy widzieć postaci jasne, jednoznaczne, spójne, łatwe do naśladowania i identyfikowania się z nimi. Wałęsa taki nie jest – jest osobny, zuchwały, butny, zaprzecza sam sobie, ludzi traktuje przedmiotowo, całe życie gra według własnych zasad i własnej prostej filozofii. Jest tak splątany, że nie sposób go zrozumieć, a tym bardziej ocenić. I to wkurza. Momentami tak, że miałam ochotę wywalić tę książkę przez okno. Ale nie wywaliłam, bo trudno się od niej oderwać. Bo pokazuje też polską niemoc, polskie zaplątania, uwikłania i jakąś nieporadność wobec tej wywalczonej wolności. Jest taki kapitalny fragment, kiedy Lech Wałęsa opowiada, jak myślał, że intelektualiści mają już wszystko pięknie przemyślane, że już ta wolność wywalczona i oni teraz z szuflady te swoje koncepty wyciągną i będzie wiadomo, co dalej robić. Ale żadnych konceptów nie było. Dostaliśmy demokrację i nikt nie wiedział, co z nią począć. I chyba nadal za dobrze nie wiemy. Ja Wam tę książkę polecam – Wam, którzy Wałęsę podziwiacie, szanujecie, doceniacie i Wam, którzy mówicie o nim z pogardą, że Bolek i zdrajca. Przeczytajcie tę rozmowę uważnie, choćby po to, żeby się przekonać, że wszystkie uproszczenia, uogólnienienia i łatwe oceny nijak się mają do zrozumienia ostatniego pół wieku naszej historii.
